Pope’s Plan Being Implemented

A landmark lawsuit has been making its way to court over the past two years.  A group of 21 young people and pre-eminent climate scientist James Hansen are suing the federal government in an attempt to force the government to base climate policy on current science.  This would have the practical effect of forcing the government to take extraordinary measures to halt CO2 emissions in a bid to stave off and avoid the worst of the consequences that scientists have outlined.

Recently, the lawsuit got a jolt of energy on the opposition side, as a group of US industry lobbyists joined with the Obama administration in opposing the lawsuit.  The two partners in opposition are usually fighting each other.  But as is said in Arabic countries, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”.

There was a jolt on the support side as well:  Two Catholic groups, one of which includes Pope Francis, announced their support of the young people and filed an amicus (friend of the court) brief in support of the suit.

In his encyclical, Pope Francis issued a call for ‘the establishment of a legal framework which can set clear boundaries and ensure the protection of ecosystems.’   In joining the suit and urging a legal path toward policy, the Pope is making steady progress toward his goal.  You can read an article on the suit here.
