Peace and Safety?

This is a short post, and I make it to ask a question rather than to give an answer.

Let’s take a look at 1 Thessalonians 5:3-6 “For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night and of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as other’s do, but let us watch and be sober.”

Perhaps it is useful to add a complimentary verse from 1 Peter chapter 4 and verse 7: “But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.”

The apostles tried to faithfully convey Christ’s prophecy and warning of end-time events. We find a good account in Matthew 24, in Mark 13 and in Luke 21. It is useful to read these three accounts of the same discourse and compare and contrast them for the fullest sense of what Christ was saying (in particular Luke 21:25&26 as much of this is not duplicated elsewhere). From what Christ said we know what to watch for in our current time and we can have a sense of the rapid advancement of events.

So here is my question: As regards the verse in 1 Thessalonians above, and in relation to the rapid adjustment and reordering of international relations and indeed the international order, at what point do we hear it said “Peace and safety!”? Europe is being cut loose from US protection guarantees (Article 5 of the NATO treaty appears to be dead) and the US appears to be trying to woo Russia as an ally against China. These are extreme maneuvers and that will require justification. Will “peace and safety” be offered as justification? Now perhaps I am simply an old man who, when the world is reordered, cannot cope with it and I therefore proclaim that the end of all things is at hand. Perhaps. But given the fullness of events at hand which in real time are fulfilling Christ’s warning to His watchmen, it is also possible that current events have a prophetic implication.

What do you say? When will we hear “Peace and safety!”?
